Improving Production Techniques
In late 2009 and early 2010, FCT will begin work on improving existing pasture in an effort to decrease the upward advance of the agricultural frontier. FCT will target areas with steep slopes and high amounts of existing erosion. FCT is also dedicated to identifying production alternatives including the replacement of cattle grazing in the páramo with a more ecologically-stable program of camelid management. Alpacas and llamas are uniquely adapted to páramo environments and ample archaeological evidence suggests the presence of camelids in the Nudo del Azuay from 2000 years B.P.
